Lead walls at AWCC

General climbing area
Awesome Walls has lead climbing for all abilities of climber from the novice through to the competition climber. There are routes from f4 to f8a on 25 different lines. There are all angles of wall from a 12m high vertical wall to the 17.5 metres high AWESOME WALL that over hangs by over 8m from its base. The lead climbing is on four different types of wall.

Lead climbing
Vertical walls
Awesome Walls has two vertical lead walls. The first wall has 4 lines each 12 metres high. The left hand line has an arete and the right hand line is in a corner. The second has 5 lines each 12 metres high. All 5 lines are on flat walls. The two walls give a grand total of 9 vertical lines, that's over 100m of vertical leading.

Lead climber
Constant overhang
This wall overhangs at a constant angle of about 10° from its base to its top 14.5m above. There are 4 lines and both the left hand and right hand lines have aretes giving varied climbing.

Overhanging lead climbing
Varied angle overhang
This wall is split into sections each with 4 lines, giving a total of 8 lines. The left hand half is very steep to start with (about 45° to a height of 4m) then a gradual overhang to over ¾ height. Above this the wall steepens again to about 40° overhanging for a short section before easing for the final headwall. On the right hand half of the wall the first section is steep (about 40° overhanging for the first 4m) after this the angle eases to about 15° overhanging till about 2/3 height. Above this the angle eases to a gentle overhanging (just off vertical) headwall. In the centre of the wall where the two halves meet there is a corner and an arete. At each end of the wall and in the centre there are vertical pillars that can be used to bypass the steep starts to the wall.

The Awesome Wall
The Awesome wall
This wall is 17.5m high and overhangs by almost half its height. This wall is s-shaped being only slightly overhanging at the bottom and at the top, on the head wall. At its steepest point, in the middle, it comes out nearly horizontally. There are 4 lines on this wall.
